Airline Electronics Ban Is Protectionism, Not Security

In a poorly rolled out bit of security theater, the US just banned people from carrying laptops, cameras, and tablets—but not phones—in the cabins of airliners traveling from several Middle Eastern and North African cities to the US.

The regulation affects fliers from Amman, Cairo, Istanbul, Jeddah, Riyadh, Kuwait, Casablanca, Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. It'll also affect anyone connecting through those airports. No US airlines fly into any of these airports.

Technology Education in Prospect: Perceptions, Change, and the Survival of the Profession

While this Special Section focuses on issues related to one of the professional fields served by Epsilon Pi Tau, there is much of value to students and practitioners in the other fields of technology, particularly as we realize our connectiveness. Whatever goes well or poorly with any one of our professional family undoubtedly affects the others in the clan. This Special Edition is based on a November 12, 1998, presentation to the 85th Mississippi Valley Technology Education Conference (MVTTEC) in Rosemont, Illinois. The details of the concept and its implementation are best told from extracts of presenter Karnes' introductory remarks at the conference.

15 Essential Netiquette Guidelines to Share with Your Students

Netiquette ( net + etiquette) is the code of proper conduct applied to virtual online spaces. This code is dictated by common sense rules ( manners ) and social conventions. Teaching students about netiquette is just as important as teaching them to use technology in their learning. Crafting a netiquette memo for your class and informing your students about the importance of these rules will definitely help you create an engaging, respectful, and meaningful learning environment where collaboration and diversity of opinions are celebrated.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due: Avoiding Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement

Plagiarism is defined as “any passing off of another’s ideas, words, or work as one’s own.” It is a form of cheating and a violation of academic integrity, and is taken seriously by reputable universities such as Alliant. Most students are honest, ethical, and hard-working, but a few take shortcuts in their coursework and some commit plagiarism inadvertently because they do not understand what it is. This is unfair to those who exercise due diligence to avoid plagiarizing. Ignorance is not a legitimate excuse. Students should take the responsibility to become familiar with the specifics of plagiarism. When in doubt, check with your instructor and ask for clarification.

How can I prevent plagiarism?

Because writing tasks often feel daunting to students, there is the temptation of plagiarizing written work. Written resources have become more easily available on the internet, and students may not have a clear understanding of what constitutes plagiarism in each of their courses (either because of lack of knowledge or because of mismatches relative to their previous experience). See also CMU's academic integrity website for additional information and resources.

Pros and Cons of Using OERs for Instruction

As with any educational resource, there are both advantages and disadvantages associated with using OERs in the classroom.

Advantages of using OERs include:

  • expanded access to learning. Students anywhere in the world can access OERs at any time, and they can access the material repeatedly.

  • scalability. OERs are easy to distribute widely with little or no cost.

  • augmentation of class materials. OERs can supplement textbooks and lectures where deficiencies in information are evident.

  • enhancement of regular course content. For example, multimedia material such as videos can accompany text. Presenting information in multiple formats may help students to more easily learn the material being taught.
